Welcome to Travel Guide 2 Tunisia, the site about travel, tourism and vacations in Tunisia.
The Tunisian Republic, usually simply known as Tunisia, is a country located on the Mediterranean coast of North Africa. The country borders Libya to the South, and Algeria to the West.
As of 2005, Tunisia had an estimated population of approximately 10.1 million. Of this population more than 700,000 live in the capital city, Tunis, and perhaps as many as 2 million in the greater Tunis metropolitan area. Other large cities in Tunisia include Ariana, Ben Arous, Bizerte, Kairouan, Medenine, Monastir, Nabeul, Sfax and Sousse.
In the past, the Tunisian economy was very
heavily biased towards state direction, intervention and participation in the economy.
Policies such as agricultural collectivization (in the 1960s), import substitution and protectionism were
implemented by turned out to be counterproductive to the goals of development and economic growth.
In the recent years, Tunisia has gradually adopted a different course. The country has moved towards economic liberalization and reform, as well as privatizing many state controlled enterprises. These changes, together with prudent economic and fiscal policies, have resulted in sustained growth for over a decade. Additionally, in 1998, Tunisia reached an association agreement with the European Union (EU), and this agreement provides for the gradual remove of trade barriers over the next few years.
The most important sectors of the Tunisian economy are the agricultural, energy, manufacturing, mining (especially of phosphates), petroleum, and tourism sectors. Economic growth is mainly focused around agriculture, oil, phosphates and tourism.
Tunisia is now classified as a middle income country. It is one of only a few developing countries in the region to have moved into this category. The future for Tunisia looks bright: As of 2007, more than one independent report rated Tunisia as the most competitive economy in both Africa and the Arab world.
